Decluttering Tips

It’s always a good time to declutter! The effort it takes is well worth the time spent, and just think of the extra space you’ll have when you are done. You will also be able to find things easier. So let’s get started!

Top Decluttering Tips

Start small

Even if you only begin with a drawer or a kitchen cupboard, you have taken an important step to reduce those unused or wanted objects. A box or two is a terrific start!

Dedicate short periods of time

You can be successful at decluttering if you dedicate short periods of time. Often people avoid this task because they can’t find a couple of days in their schedule to get the whole house decluttered. Rather than putting it off any longer, develop a schedule where you can dedicate thirty to sixty minutes a day to go closet by closet or room by room.

Ask yourself these questions

  • Does this add value to my life?
  • Have I used this in a year?
  • Do I have more than one of these?
  • Would I buy it again?
  • How many times have I used it?
  • Does it fit?
  • Do I have space for this?

Ask for help

Decluttering is a big job and getting others involved can really speed up the process. If items belong to other family members, it only makes sense that they join in and make decisions about their belongings.

If the kids are old enough to help out, it is a great idea to include them. Let them decide which of their items stay or what items go. This activity can also be a great learning experience for the kids!

Have plenty of boxes and containers

Choose sturdy boxes and plastic containers. It is a helpful idea to label the boxes as you go. The more detail in your explanation the better.

Don’t forget to use recycle bins for those items you have decided are trash.

Stay focused

Stick to your time schedule and plan. Turn on some favourite tunes and sing-a-long.

Plan a reward for your efforts

Decluttering can be a huge task and a lot of time and effort are required to get it done. Adding a little reward for yourself when the job is completed may be just the motivation you need to finish up.

Keep up with regular household tasks

Don’t let the daily household tasks fall behind while you are dedicating time to decluttering. Avoiding regular chores is a bad idea. It can leave you frustrated with the mess piling up as well as, discourage you from completing the original decluttering task.

Create a plan to keep it going

Once you have finished the decluttering, make sure you have put a plan in place to keep things better organized around the house. Everything should have its place.
