Winter Weekend Projects For Homeowners

The winter is the perfect time to clean, organize and decorate your home. Often people associate spring with cleaning, but why not get a head start during the often drab and dreary winter days. This way when spring appears you can spend time outside perking up your yard, garden or window boxes.

The winter is the perfect time to clean, organize and decorate your home. Often people associate spring with cleaning, but why not get a head start during the often drab and dreary winter days. This way when spring appears you can spend time outside perking up your yard, garden or window boxes.

The best place to start is with a plan. Decide how much time you can spend each weekend to dedicate to one project. You will be amazed how much you can accomplish with clear goals. My suggestions below can be used to start your plan. Maybe they will spark some ideas of your own. Use your calendar to mark each weekend project on or create a checklist.

  • Pick a closet – If you are choosing a bedroom closet then pack up some of the clothes that don’t fit or are no longer worn and bag them up to donate. Remember, shoes and boots can also be given to charity. If you choose a children’s closet then be sure to pack up all of the clothes they have out grown. If the budget allows, add some shoe shelving. This shelving can be found at affordable prices at your local discount stores.
  • Organize your papers – You can use simple file folders or a desk draw but sort them, shred the ones you no longer need and save the important papers where you can easily access them. Separating your papers into files will save time and space. Consider these suggestions for specific files: warranty information; insurance details; tax information; automobile documents; medical records; household papers and personal papers.
  • Paint a room – Every room can be brightened up with a coat of paint. Choose the room that fits into your time schedule and get going. You can decide to re-do the colour you have or change things up to give the room a new look and feel.
  • Pick a drawer – When was the last time you cleaned your silverware drawer? This is a drawer that the family is in and out of several times a day so may be the best place to start. If your budget allows, perhaps it’s time to change your utensil tray. Shine up the cutlery and eliminate the clutter.
  • Baseboard Cleaning – Using a small brush or a new paint brush get down and dust the baseboards off. Using a vacuum may also work, but it is often a challenge in the corners. Typically, water with mild dish soap will work. However, depending on the make you may need a wood cleaner. If you are not sure check with the manufacturer or your local hardware store. Try using cotton swabs to clean the corners.

Of course these suggestions are just the beginning of some winter weekend projects to perk up your home. With over 10 weekends left until spring, you should be able to accomplish a good majority of your list with just a couple of hours every weekend. Get organized, get motivated and get it accomplished before spring!
